Does flu vaccine shortage indicate problems with NHS Scotland‘s procurement system?
The Scottish Government has admitted that it has not been able to buy enough of the recommended flu vaccine to ensure that all people aged over 65 can receive it.
As a result, the Fluad vaccine will only be given to those aged over 75.
Fluad was approved for use in the UK late last year, but Scotland’s public health minister Joe FitzPatrick told the Scottish Parliament that the supplier was unable to guarantee sufficient quantities of the vaccine before the start of the annual vaccination programme.
People aged 65-74 will continue to be offered the standard vaccine.
